Beaches will be well-represented in Gate River Run

Today's 32nd annual Gate River Run in downtown Jacksonville will again have a big turnout from Beaches runners and walkers in the projected field of 20,000 people in various events.
The Team Gate competition continues among the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club, The Lodge, defending champion Epping Forest Yacht Club and The River Club as the four compete against each other to determine the fastest Gate Club in the main 15-kilometer race. To kick off the spirited competition, Team Gate members met for a pasta dinner Thursday night at the Inn & Club.
- On Sunday: The Ponte Vedra Athletic Association will hold a Home Run Derby from 1 to 3 p.m. at Cornerstone Park in Ponte Vedra Beach to help raise funds for the family of Mikey Williams, 12, a four-time Ponte Vedra All-Star baseball player who is being treated for recurrent lymphoma. The event's proceeds will go toward medical and other expenses incurred by the Williams family as Mikey battles cancer.
The derby, open to kids and adults, will feature a slug fest by University of North Florida's Ozzie the Osprey, contests for home runs, pitching speed and accuracy and more. The event will be hosted by sports anchor Dan Hicken of First Coast News. Registration costs $25. For more information and registration forms, go to www.pvaabaseball.com, call 285-7951, or e-mail pamkaoohno@comcast.net.
The derby drew the attention of Rick Mansfield, chairman of the Jacksonville Grand Prix go-kart endurance race to benefit Spina Bifida of Jacksonville. On Saturday, March 28, 14 go-kart teams with drivers from Ponte Vedra to New York will take to the tracks for the seventh annual six-hour go-kart race. The race and associated events have raised $100,000 for the cause.
The concept of the race is simple: Four or more drivers per team race against each other and the clock for six hours. Drivers normally take 25-minute shifts in the race, which runs between 350 and 400 laps depending on experience. In the past, former Jacksonville Jaguars players and 24 Hours of Daytona winners have been among the competitors. Go-karts are provided and safety equipment is available.
